coronavirus cases vs vaccination numbers

Numbers Don’t Lie

Below are two charts. The Top one is a graph of the percentage of the U.S. population that has received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccination by date. The bottom one is a copy from the CDC website on the number of COVID-19 new cases by date from Dec 20, 2020 to June 1, 2021.  These numbers are easily verifiable by multiple sources.

There has been much talk that the vaccine is responsible for the large decrease in the number of new cases of COVID-19. As these graphs clearly show, the number of cases of COVID-19 had decreased by 2/3rds by the time the percentage of people in the U.S. who had been vaccinated reach 10% on February 10, 2021.

Statistically, it is not possible for only 10% of the population being vaccinated to cause a 2/3rds drop in cases. The daily high on January 8, 2021 was 307,101 new cases. By February 10, that number had dropped to 96,345 new cases. The precipitous drop continued for almost a month before leveling off. This is in spite of the fact that vaccination percentages continued to rise.

This information is not presented as a discussion on whether someone should get vaccinated. I leave that conversation for others in a lengthier forum.  This offering is to correct the misconception that the vaccines have been the dominant factor in the decline of new COVID-19 cases. Clearly, they have not. Numbers don’t lie!
